  2. A customer emailed this question: Dear Electrician Toronto, I need to move a plug socket about 3' along the wall. The problem is, there is not enough slack and two wires are going to the socket. They seem to be going off in opposite directions. I was hoping there might be a simple fix for it. I don't really want to be pulling new wires all over the kitchen. Electricity is dangerous because of its disruptive effect on the internal organs and the human body. A DIYfer can get a shock or die of electrocution. We do it because we know how to handle this type of work. For that reason, consider having a licensed expert do the job from the beginning to the end. Or at least let him inspect your deeds afterwards. This would eliminate another hazard of electrical work, the risk of fire or damage to the appliance, device or the house due to incorrect wiring. Now, back to the issue at hand. Always kill the power first and make absolutely sure it is OFF! To resolve the issue you need to run one extra cable to your new socket location and join all three cables in parallel (two old ones and one new) together in the old JB. The Canadian Electrical Code specifies that all junction boxes must remain accessible. It does not allow you to hide an outlet or box under drywall or beneath any other material for that matter. Such concealment makes it very hard for anyone to locate a fault if one should happen in the future. Moreover, make sure that the wires are tightly twisted together before applying wire nuts. After that close the box with a blank, flat cover plate. You are done! Testing and understanding the wiring could be necessary in many cases when a more complicated configuration is present. If there are two or more conductors of different colors spliced together in the JB, you need to call a PRO.
