Why an Electric Car is Perfect for a Summer Getaway

Electric versus gas power­ Powering electric cars is cheaper than fueling cars that operate on gasoline. Solar and time-of-use (off-peak) electricity pricing further decreases the costs of operating electric vehicles, and available government grants and tax incentives can greatly reduce sticker shock. Add to that the fact that electric vehicle prices are continuing to fall while gasoline prices continue to rise, and you’ve got a recipe for some serious savings

  • The poorer the fuel economy of the car you are switching from, the greater the savings of switching to an electric car.

  • 2012 estimates for the U.S. indicate driving the fully electric Nissan Leaf at 29 kWh/100 miles versus a gasoline powered Toyota Camry at 28 mpg will yield you a whopping $1,001 savings for every 10,00 miles driven.

  • Compare that same Leaf to a Toyota Prius Hybrid (gasoline and electric) vehicle with an estimated 50 mpg, and you’ll save roughly $410 for every 10,000 miles.

  • Looking for something a little fancier? Opting for a Tesla Model S at 35 kWh/100 miles versus a Mercedes S550 at 19mpg will save you $1,566 for every 10,000 miles. Multiply that by 150,000 miles... How’s that for performance?
